Several people have asked about the new material surrounding the trees in St Julian's Avenue. Here is an explanation - The material looks like asphalt but is called FlexiPave. It is predominantly made from recycled rubber and stone and is extremely porous, allowing water straight through to the roots of the trees. It has been chosen for these very busy pavements because it removes trip hazards, is slip-resistant and is designed to flex a little as the tree and roots grow. It’s used widely across the US and Europe and has been used by St Paul’s Cathedral.
